On a Winning Streak in Interschool Contests

“Men talk as if victory were something fortunate. Work is victory.”-Emerson

Interschool contests are an ideal opportunity for community school children to gain exposure to the outside world and experience true competition in challenging environments. It gives them an opportunity to find out where they stand and interact with peers belonging to different social circles.

This is the reason why at Badri High School we believe strongly in providing this valuable insight into the real world. On one hand students taste the fruit of competitiveness by participating in interschool events; on the other they feel the glory of representing their alma mater.

January was a month of glory and accolades. The second term began on a positive note as one of the nightingales of our school, Ammar Mustansir of Grade 10, represented BHS in the Happy Home School System Fest 2019 which celebrated 70 years of HHS.

In a series of competitions in the HHS Fest, one was Qirat ul Quraan held on 25th January 2019  in which 50 students participated which was judged by top Qaaris of the city. Ammar bagged the third spot in the contest and his teacher Janab Mulla Abdul Qadir Bhai was also lauded for his role in Ammar’s grooming. Ammar had earlier won the third position in the SSC Board Student’s Week Qirat Contest as well which was held in December 2018.

On 27th January, Saturday, Fatima Sh. Mansoor of Badri High School won the first prize in the Art Competition hosted by MSB, Haidery, in which the artist from 17 schools (72 artists) were given an opportunity to showcase their talent. The topic was ‘Fun Learning in School’ and the concept of her painting was appreciated by the judges as it was meaningful and classic. She tried to depict in a scrapbook form how activities in schools play a pivotal role in preparing you for challenges in your professional life and help unearth your potential.

As it is truly said, “The principles of true art is not to portray but to evoke.”

Such triumphs infuse confidence in these young, talented pupils and certainly, pave the way for their success in their future professional lives.

Diamond Jubilee Sports Fest 2019 Helps Athletes Shine

It was a breezy morning on Friday, the 11th of January, 2019. Khaimat-ur-Riazat stood picturesque amongst the hustle and bustle of Badrians entering the ground with the warmth of enthusiasm and fervor of motivation. The radiant smiles on their faces conveyed their anticipation of a thrilled and elated Sports Fest. Representatives of Blue, Green, Yellow and Red houses settled down in the audience camp as directed by the House Captains waiting impatiently for the Diamond Jubilee Sports Fest 2019 to commence. The canvas of BHS emerged as kaleidoscopic.

This year, the Sports Fest was themed around a diamond as we celebrated the 75th Milaad Mubarak of Syedna Aali Qadr Muffaddal Saifuddin T.U.S.

The day began with the recitation of verses from Al Quran by Hussain Shk Huzaifa Motiwala, a student of Class X, followed by Marasi of Imam Hussain A.S. rendered by BHS Zakireen. The air then filled with mellow and honeyed voices of BHS Zakireen when they rendered a Madeh, commemorating the breeze of Rabee. The Wazifat-us-Shukar and National Anthem were recited, after which our Chief Guest, Janab Naeem BhaiSaheb, declared the games open. Janab Juzer BhaiSaheb Amil Saheb of Karachi and Janab Shabbir BhaiSaheb Imadi also graced the occasion with their valuable presence as Chief guests.

It was a splendid spectacle watching the Head Boy, Adnan Zahid, taking oath along with the four house captains, after which the games started. The game opener was the PT Display of the Pre Primary Section, where the tiny glittering diamonds shone with brilliant focus and concentration. It was a fantastic sight watching little Badrians swaying their colourful pompoms in air. The children demonstrated commendable discipline as they had been practicing for two months in the morning assembly.

The Students of Primary Section also astounded the audience with the formation of flowers as a Tehniyat for the Diamond Jubilee Milad. Following this, students of Classes IV and V performed a drill which was concluded as the formation of BHS, which left the audience flabbergasted.

Races of Pre Primary Section started as soon as the drill and the formation ended. The little children jolted the audience with their verve and determination to finish the task and reach the finish line. Primary races were the next. The races were chosen so as to test the students on a variety of skills. Races such as the obstacle race and the blockage race tested the runners on their team playing skills and co-operation while as sprints evaluated the runners` speed and agility. Balancing race and body bridge formation were also a visual treat.

Secondary races started with the shuttle race which was meant to check the team work of the runners along with their agility and speed, which was followed by the stack race, the jumping leap and the all famous wheel barrow race. The commentators Fatima Najmuddin, Zahra Aun Ali, and Zahabya Najmi, belonging to Class X, kept motivating the participants and updating the audience about the happenings of the field. The runners of the Secondary Section ran in a 100 M sprint race. Tug of war was the final event in which four houses competed. The final round was played between Red house and Green house. The Red house defended the house cup this year too as they won by 169 points while Blue was declared to be the runner up with a difference of just one point. They stood on 168. The Diamond Jubilee Sports Fest 2019 ended amongst the cheers of victory. May this spirit of sportsmanship and healthy competition prevail for ages and ages under the luminous leadership of Syedna Aali Qadar Muffaddal Saifuddin T.U.S. Ameen

Winter Learning Festival

Winters are reminiscent of warm socks, hot cocoa, roasted peanuts, steaming coffee and many such things. If one is a student, winters prove to be a harbinger of fun-filled holidays. On the contrary, winter breaks are supposed to be a period of rejuvenation and restoration of passion and teaching energy for smart teachers.

Winter is also a reminder of flocks of migratory birds flying high above in the sky. Birds are known for their long migratory journeys taken in the winter season in search of better food and shelter. The prime reason to migrate is survival. The same way, keen teachers also migrate towards places where opportunities of professional development are available.

Keeping those astute teachers in mind, BIRD (Badri Institute of Resource & Development) resolved to lead the migration pack this winter break to Badri High School where Winter Learning Festival was being held. It commenced on 24th of December 2018 and lasted till 29th of December 2018.

The trainings and workshops offered were:

The variety of workshops and professional development sessions were attended by a number of teachers from different schools and institutions such as Pathways British School, The Academy, The Noori Educators, Eureka, Lilies School and many others including the teachers of Badri High School. The attendants were filled with brand new vigor and energy by the end of the festival. A Head teacher from Noori Educators, Ms. Rukhsar Nizam commended the efforts of the facilitators and said, “These workshops and training sessions are vital for every teacher to attend as it truly restores in us the passion with which we started teaching.”  Her colleague, Sadaf added, “I have attended many workshops but all of them e wercostly. These workshops were very reasonable for the pocket of a teacher, and that too certified. Surely, this is a plus.”

BIRD intends to facilitate students, parents and teachers by arming them with the skill set required in the 21st century as we believe that every teacher needs to improve not because they are not good enough, but because they can be even better.

BHS represents Karachi in Dodgeball at Khairpur

The winter season proved to be an invigorating one this December as the students of class 8, 9 and 10 proved their mettle at Interschool sporting events.

The first major win came at the Quaid e Azam Sports Festival organized by NSTAPAK and the Sindh Dodgeball Association Council. The students tasted the flavor of the emerging game of dodgeball this year at the hands of a veteran dodgeball instructor in school and also attended workshops arranged by the organizing Committee of the National Dodegball Course at HEXIS College.

Finally, they were ready for the big league on 24th December 2018! The girls and boys teams from Badri High School went head-to-head with eight other teams from schools, clubs and colleges at the Dewa Academy campus. The girls team from Badri High School beat their rivals by playing brilliantly to win the first position. The organizers were astounded by the grace and confidence with which the girls played in their ridas. The boys team from BHS won the third position.

The boys of class 8,9 and 10 of BHS also emerged triumphant as they clashed with the boys of Saifiyah Boys High School on Monday 24th Dec in a friendly Futsal Match at the SBHS campus.

The cherry on top was when the boys and girls teams represented Karachi at Khairpur in the Sindh Dodgeball Competition where they clashed with teams from cities of Interior Sindh. They left for Khairpur on Friday 4th January 2019 and reached the historic city of Khairpur on Saturday morning. The athletes played deftly and both the teams emerged victorious on 5th January 2019 bagging teh provincial dodgeball champion title.

These experiences proved that our children excel in physical development and sports thanks to the encouragement received from schools due Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin’s TUS guidance to encourage physical fitness in the community, especially the youth.

All in all, the winter break was certainly a well-spent one and the students are back for the second term feeling fresh and invigorated!

THE VOICE OF CHANGE

The voices swept over the expanse of the auditorium…impassioned, confident, eloquent voices that echoed off the walls and moved hearts, touched souls, probed controversial topics and forced minds to ponder.

They were the voices of the youth of the community—young boys and girls belonging to the seven Imani schools of Karachi.

The Interschool Bilingual Declamation Contest organized by Badri High School on 17th November 2018 aimed to provide a platform to the seven community schools in Karachi to display the oratory skills of the youth and polish their abilities as communicators. Such skills are imperative to be successful in the spheres of our personal, professional and academic lives in this media-dominated, technological age.

The English Declamation with its 14 participants (2 from each participating school) was judged by Ms. Marya Nakhoda, who has excelled as a trainer and facilitator at the PACC and Mrs. Samina Godhrawala, an English language expert who has taught at Al Jamea tus Saifiyah, Karachi, for a decade.

The 14 Urdu participants were judged by Sh. Taha Jalebiwala, a renowned Urdu writer and columnist and editor of the magazine Raudat. He was accompanied by Sh. Shabbar Jamali, a renowned poet of the community who has penned popular Marasi and Madahe.

The audience boasted of dignitaries like MNA Najeeb Haroon and Jinnah Women’s University Chancellor, Mr. Wajihuddin Ahmad who was so moved that he announced scholarships for the winning girls.

Janab Naeem Bhaisaheb, the chief patron of BHS, was present throughout the two and a half hour event. Also present were Amil Saheb of Karachi, Janaab Juzer Bhaisaheb, Amil Saheb of Al Mohalatul Burhaniyah, Janab Shabbir Bhaisaheb and Amil Saheb of Fakhri Mohalla Sh. Murtaza bhai as well as scholars from Al Jamea tus Saifiyah whose presence motivated the young presenters.

The students chose out of the following topics:

Topics:

A thing of beauty is a joy forever.

Envy is the ulcer of the soul.

Exploring Mars, discovering Earth.

A community receives light from its history.

The apple does not fall far from a tree.

Nothing is permanent but change

Ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country.

Life begins on the other side of despair.

In the warrior`s code, there is no surrender.

A genius like me is not born every day.

BHS encourages participation in Inter School competitive sporting events as it has proved to enhance skills, fitness and teamwork and exhort physical activity. The athletes of the school stand out from others as they display discipline because competitive sport requires dedicated training and practice. They understand that with hard work, often come results.

Students who ran on the track experienced the thrill of victory as well how to deal with disappointment. Losing well is a skill best learnt early and learnt well. Engraining good sportsmanship early can ensure students carry these good practices across every aspect of their lives and into their adulthood.

Yet above all, participation in sporting events builds camaraderie and teamwork. It’s this shared experience and emotion that builds loyalty and trust within a team and as a school.

Parenting-Understanding our Children

The 27th of October 2018 was scheduled to be the first Parent-Teacher Meeting of the Academic Year 2018-19 at Badri High School. However, when the core team sat to ponder the strategies for this year’s PTM we all saw a prominent pattern emerge from the feedback of the past PTMs.

When parents came to school to discuss their children’s academic progress, they also shared how their children were experiencing behavioral issues. Some children displayed signs of aggression, while some parents said their wards were very influenced by the imperious social media. Some fretted over how their child was becoming an introvert while others complained of anxiety symptoms in their children. Most parents expressed helplessness as to how they could help their child get through these trying phases.

These were the very students who were struggling in academics due to their behavioural issues.

This was when the core team at BHS decided to invite a Dr. Urooj Zehra, Clinical Psychologist, Speech Therapist and Psychotherapist to conduct a session for the parents of BHS to handle the major issues we had identified in the children.

Thus, the 27th of October became a day where the parents and teachers truly came together as partners in the progress of their children. Dr. Urooj, along with her colleague Dr. Mohammed Irfan, addressed over 400 parents assembled at the Al Jamea tus Saifiyah Auditorium early Saturday morning.

The professionals, taking cue from their study of the work of prominent psychologists and sociologists, spoke at length about the various parenting strategies and the most effective ones for the children of today. They talked about the issues children face as they step into their challenging teen years and how parents can be their support at this time. Parenting dos and don’ts were elucidated and a few activities to encourage interaction with the parents made the morning a lively one.

Dr. Urooj also touched upon how parents must behave when a new baby is to be born into the family and how the elder child must be treated to create acceptance for the new arrival.

A questionnaire was also circulated to help the parents reflect on which parenting style they are currently following and how they can make their relationship with their children a better and healthier one.

Parents appreciated the efforts of the school in anticipating the need of such a seminar and agreed on how they must as parents be open to learning in these changing times.

BHS Celebrates World Food Day 2018

BHS Celebrates World Food Day 2018 | By Sakina Amir Godhrawala (Student of Class 9)

In the year 1979, an organization was formed because of the alarming case of people suffering from hunger and malnutrition. Every year we celebrate this sublime day to eradicate hunger, spread awareness about food and help people consume proper diet.

Badri High School (BHS) believes in creating awareness about the world we live in, in line with the vision of Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin TUS who guides us to waste not a single grain of food and wishes for each believer to eat well.

Following this line of action on 16th of October 2018, students of BHS filled thaalis, stuck stickers creating awareness about saving food and distributed Faize Mawaid Burhani all around Al Mohalatul Burhaniyah.  A poster making contest as well as a walkathon around the vicinity helped engage the heads, hands and hearts of the children  towards this cause.

The school day was filled with enactments on World Food Day and Food Security as well as informative literature and news stories were shared in class.

This day was commemorated to create food awareness, about its hygiene and warn people against consuming improper diet.

On one hand there is hunger, while on the other due to improper diet or eating of excess of junk food nearly 40% of the world’s population is obese and 25% is overweight. Let us all play a role in saving food, eating the right diet and realizing the dream of a Zero Hunger World.

Counseling Students—Because Education Teaches Compassion

A school must give much more that knowledge from books; it must bestow to its pupils beyond the confines of a carefully thought-out curriculum; it should teach much more than things printed in black and white. It must do more than stimulate minds—it should touch hearts and heal souls.

Badri High School envisages that an education must enable a child to become the best version of himself; unearthing his potential; allow him to live a life of dignity in this world and contribute to society.

However, sometimes life puts young children in situations which they or their parents are not equipped to deal with. We see students struggle with learning disabilities, some coming from dysfunctional families and broken homes. All this takes a toll on a child and hampers his intellectual growth and ability to learn.

This is the reason why a student counselor is a part of the faculty of any reputed educational institute.

Since the Academic year 2017-18 a student counselor visited BHS one Saturday a month to help students who were seen struggling in school. Over 40 students were counseled in repeated sessions in the last year, and in most cases positive results were seen as students blossomed as sensitive issues were addressed.

This year, the need for a counselor was felt even more as awareness regarding the benefits of counseling were clearly manifested last year. Parents themselves requested for their wards to be counseled, feeling at a loss as to address many behavioral issues.

Thus in this Academic Year 2018-19, a qualified Clinical Psychologist, Dr. Syeda Urooj Zehra, who is also Psychotherapist and Speech Therapist, has been hired to come to school every Thursday to address the needs of students identified by teachers as having behavioural issues due to deeper, underlying causes.

The vision is to hold the hands of these children, give them a listening ear and give them objective advice to help them cope in the best possible way with the situation they are in.

Along with this, career counseling is an important agenda to help the students carve a road-map for their future. For this professionals have been invited to visit the school and give motivating talks to provide an insight into different fields and their scope to the students. The goal is to provide them enough knowledge about the world beyond the walls of the school so that they make informed decisions about their future careers.

One-on-one sessions with reputed educationists like Sh. Moiz bhai Sabunwala, who recently came to orient the students about their choice of subjects, will help the students chalk a game plan for their future.

BHS believes in leaving no stone unturned in helping and supporting each and every student to realize his potential and these counseling initiatives are surely a step in the desired direction.

Learning from the wise

“Is there anyone so wise as to learn by the experience of others?”–Voltaire

One learns not just from books but from the lives of great people.   True education is one that teaches an individual to treat each day as a learning experience, to observe the world closely and glean lessons from the lives of others.

This is the reason why Badri High School invites the learned and accomplished members of the Dawoodi Bohra community to come and share their inspiring life experiences with the students here.

In the past a distinguished assortment of scholars, professionals, office bearers, social workers and students have been invited to give motivating talks to the senior students of BHS and the students have always been duly enraptured by the biographies of these living legends.

One such erudite member of the community visited the BHS premises on Monday, 8th October 2018. Shaikh Ghulam Abbas Cyclewala, one of the most experienced Chemical Engineers of Pakistan, consultant, businessman, educationist, spokesman, artist, traveler and philanthropist, recently published his riveting autobiography titled CHEMAGE: LEARN+EARN+RETURN. After Sh. Ghulam Abbas was welcomed in the assembly early Monday morning he was introduced by the Principal Janab Sh. Hashim bhai and later he met with the students of Class 9-10 in the Computer Lab.

In one hour, he shared the incredible journey of his thrilling life and the innumerable hurdles he had to overcome to attain the position he stands at today. The children were hanging onto each word as he told them about the struggles of his childhood and how perseverance pays off. He led the students through the highs and lows of his ambitious youth and inspired them to live their dreams. Through his eyes the children learnt about the Karachi of yore and its progress through the last several decades. He counseled them regarding their future and helped them devise a strategy to attain their goals, all the while advising them to the ambitious, focused and daring.

We are privileged to be part of a community where a great number of learned men are generous to share their experiences so that the youth may learn from the foibles and derive inspiration from their accomplishments.

A day to explore our Sindhi origin

The world is a book and those who do not travel read only page.

Travelling and exploration is considered the most significant forms of self-education. In the olden days, the wisdom of a person was gauged by the number of places visited by him. Even for the sake of acquiring formal education, people of earlier times believed travelling to be a good omen.

In this century of technology and innovation, where, the places one wishes to visit can visit you, Badri High School believes educational excursions and trips to different places of historical and cultural significance as an inseparable part of teaching and learning.

One such extra ordinary signature trip of BHS is a trip to interior Sindh. This trip serves to be a window of experiential learning for the students of Grade IX as Sindhi language is one of the compulsory subjects. The content of Sindhi and English, in this particular grade, as per the Secondary Board of Education curriculum, highlights Sindh as a center of cultural heritage and ancestral values.

On 29th September, 24 students of Grade IX offered morning prayers at Husami Masjid, where a bus waited for them. The air was filled with enthusiastic chatter when the students boarded the bus. Ajrak was draped around the shoulders of many as a symbol of their zest and zeal. Cries of Allah O Akbar and Long live Syedna Muffaddal Saifuddin filled the air as the bus left with the young explorers. Recitation of verses from the Holy Quran along with Ya Syeda and Fulkul Hussain provided the globetrotters with the barakat needed.

The first stop was Dhamthal where hot, delectable halwa puri waited for the students. After having the much-needed breakfast, the bus headed off to BhitShah. On the way to Bhit Shah, students visited the once small village, Hala Haveli, where the famous Sindhi Saint Shah Abdul Latif Bhitai was born to Syed Habib Shah. Now, it is a developing city of Sindh, which is also known to be the center of handicrafts and the famous gulkaari of the province. Students were taken to a pottery cottage industry where they saw how pots were made out of clay and how gulkaari was done. The students were mesmerized by the whole process.

Still fascinated by the flowered pots and pans of clay, the students were taken to the famous Hala bazaar where the eager bunch of buyers rushed to the shops selling ajraks, khaddar suits, pottery, sindhi topi, and handicrafts. The experience of shopping in the native language was a challenging task. The purpose of language as a communication tool was highlighted.

The next stop was the shrine of the famous saint of Sindh, Shah Abdul Latif Bhitai, who was known for his services for bringing the non-Muslims to the fold of Islam. As the Urs of Shah Abdul Latif Bhitai is in Safar, the shrine was packed with disciples and devotees, paying their respect to the Saint of Sindh. The students offered Zuhr prayers in the masjid in the vicinity of the shrine. A bunch of devotees were reciting the kalam from Shah Jo Risalo, written by the pious saint, on the melodious notes of tambooro, a musical instrument invented by Shah Abdul Latif Bhitai himself. The emanation of the shrine at the time of rendition displayed respect and love for each other, which was the message of Shah Abdul Latif Bhitai.

A museum at Bhit Shah was visited by the students which had dioramas of Sindhi folk tales on display. It was a visual treat to see famous folklores such as Sassi punnu, Meer Mohaari, Marai and many more come alive.

By this time, the morning breakfast and the snacks provided in the bus had been digested. So the expedition group sat down to have their lunch in a local hotel on the highway where they sat on manjis like people in Sindh.

The next stop was the Sindh University, Jamshoro, where lies Ms. Elsa Kazi, the poetess of the Neem Tree and the German wife of Allam I.I. Qazi. The group boarded the bus cheerily and was greeted by a heavy downpour on the way to Jamshoro. The kotri barrage was a visual treat in thick, driving rain. The rain and the bus both stopped outside the Institute of Sindhology, the first Sindhi language based research department, operating at the University of Sindh, Jamshoro. The students went off on to the grave of the poetess. There were cries of amazement when the students saw that the grave is actually surrounded with lots of Neem Trees.

Could man be as bold as thou and rise,

Above the earth with the sheltering arm,

To save the protected ones from harm,

From sorrows, poverty and vice,

Through sacrifice!

The quiet surroundings were echoing with the message of love and affection for one`s brethren.

The students visited the grave of Allama I.I. Qazi, the vice chancellor of the University and husband of the poetess as well. The students boarded the bus once again to retreat to the city of lights with lots of memories and experiences that only travelling can teach. With tired feet and puffy eyes, the group reached home at 9:30 PM after a day well spent.

The Railway Children

Gail Godwin said that “Good teaching is ¼ preparation and ¾ theater” and we at Badri High School work towards making information come to life.

The class 7 students are currently studying the novel “The Railway Children by E.Nesbit”. Keeping that in mind we planned a trip to “The Karachi Cantonment Railway Station” to let the students learn about trains and the working that takes place at a train station.

The group of 45 students set off at around 11:00 am on Tuesday 4th September 2018 in a coaster. With the chanting and laughter we reached the Cantt Station at around 11:35 am were the Station Manager, Mr. Mohammad Rafiq Baloch, greeted us warmly and answered the children’s queries one by one.

The manager informed the students about the 8 platforms at the Cantt Station where about 2000 passages daily come to Karachi and 2000 travel to the north of Pakistan.

He explained that the Cantt Station is one of the busiest stations of the country. Then he invited the students to wait in the Waiting Room as a Teez Gam was about to arrive and we had to visit that train.

We were amazed to see an enormous room spot clean with all the necessary facilities required for passenegrs to sit and wait for his/ her train to arrive. Students asked the station manager why they didnt allow the passengers to use the room but he couldn’t reply.

Next, we crossed the bridge to platform Number 4 where we climbed on to the Business Class carriage of the train. The students were excited as a cool breeze blew when the door opened. The manager showed them that each compartment had 6 berths and one washroom. He allotted 6 students one compartment and let them experience how it felt. The students were enjoying themselves when we were asked to move to the area where the engine was.

In groups of 4 the students climbed to the engine room were the engine driver answered all their queries. He also showed the students how brakes are pulled and the students rang the loud horn. However, climbing down was a scary experience.

Then we experienced how the tracks get changed automatically. We saw how an engine is attached to a boogie and how it moves to the cleaning area to get cleaned before the next trip. Then the manager arranged for us to learn first-hand how the control tower gives signals and how they tell the driver and the passengers about the train which is about to leave. We stood on the bridge and saw the train leave and counted the boogies to see if they were 18 or more.

We learned a lot about trains and this experience will really help the students to understand the setting and plot of the novel as they will now be able to understand how the three children felt and experienced every day they visited the railway station.

The Best of Deen and Duniya

This morning was a reflection of what Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin TUS envisages a community school to be able to achieve. On one hand stood the eighth Hafiz of school; the fourth of this Academic Year 2018-19. On the other, stood the student who had secured the highest percentage in the SSC Part 2 examination.

Burhanuddin Zulfiqar of class 8 became the eighth Hafiz of the school and was bestowed with garlands of appreciation while Husain Murtaza (Class 10 batch of 2017-18) was lauded for his hard work and A1 grade in the Board Examination.

Burhanuddin himself is an example of how a child from a simple family, can achieve a dream coveted by thousands today—the dream to Hifz the Quran e Majeed. He is a playful and energetic child who has held onto his dream of becoming a Hafiz for a year and a half, forging ahead with dedication and a positive attitude. Burhanuddin is one who does not believing in ensconcing himself in a room to Hifz but has achieved a perfect balance in his social and academic life. He prays in the masjid three times and has a plethora of friends due to his jovial nature.

Last week, too, Ibrahim Yousuf of class 7 became a Hafiz after giving the complete Quran Ikhtibaar to Shahzada Husain Bhai sahib DM increasing the enthusiasm to perform Hifzul Quran in BHS to a feverish pitch.

Badri High School is dedicated to providing the best of secular and spiritual education to the students of the community since the last 50 years. It is driven by the ethos that guides all community schools of providing the best knowledge in the light of the Ilm of Ale Mohammed SA.

For this aim to be achieved the Deeniyat and Secular staff work in liaison and cooperation to ensure the Taleem as well as the Tarbiyat of the children of momineen who are the future of the community. The barakat of the Qudoom of the 53rd Dai al Mutlaq Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin in 2016 has ushered in another revival in the institute. During this visit Aali Qadr Maula TUS inaugurated the Hifz Room and since then eight students have achieved the status of Hafiz ul Quran. With this is the best facilities and facilitators providing instruction in secular subjects, language development, extra-curricular activities and recently STEM education through Robotics, Mind Math and Arduino.

May Allah Subhanuhu help us to lovingly nurture each student at Badri High School in light of the lofty vision of Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin TUS.

THE GRADUATING CLASS OF BHS PERFORMS KUN SAFAR

It was 11:30 pm on the 26th of June 2018 but the street outside Burhani Bagh, Haidry was bustling with activity as 44 students of the graduating class of Badri High School piled into buses, along with 10 khidmat guzaars and teachers, which were to take them to the Jinnah International Airport for their flight to Najaf.

The excitement in the air was palpable as teary eyed parents bid their children farewell. Some had made their passports for the first time and were excited to sit in a plane. Some were the first in their families to travel to the blessed land of Karbala. Needless to say, it was a thrilling moment as the Fly Dubai flight took off into the early morning skies as dawn broke.

Hearts thumped as the plane touched the Najaf Airport runway at 9 am. After a quick immigration the students were taken to the Faiz e Burhani where they were given luxurious rooms to freshen up. The first time the children stepped into the Haram Mubarak of Maulana Ali AS it was 3 pm. Yet the blinding light of the sun paled in front of the splendor and majesty of the golden-domed premises.

The next four days were spent with Imamat Fajar Namaz being offered at the magnificent Masjid e Kufa where the students also got the opportunity to perform Ziyarat of Mehrab—the place of the martyrdom of Maulana Ali AS, as well as the ziyarat of the Maulana Muslim bin Aqueel AS and Maulana Hani bin Urwa AS.

For the students the experience of connecting history and the riwayaat they had heard all their lives of Maulana Ali AS and his ashaab like Maulana Masiam bin Tamaar AS, Maulana Rushaid ul Hajari and Maulana Kumail bin Ziyad AS was a memorable experience. As they walked through the pillared corridors of Masjid e Kufa and heard the tales of devotion of Ashaab of Maulana Ali AS their hearts filled with awe and gratitude.

On 29th June 2018 the group reached Karbala Moalla. Just entering the Haram Mubarak of Imam Husain AS caused tears to pour down everyone’s cheeks. We could not believe we were finally here in one of the realms of heaven.  As our foreheads touched the Zarih of Imam Husain we felt gratitude to have been beckoned  to a place where destinies are altered and prayers are answered. The imposing Haram of Maulana Abbas AS left us awestruck.

In the days that followed the students visited the Khaimah Gah where the Zikr of Imam Husain AS, Ahle Bait and Ashaab made everyone weep. We also performed Ziyarat of Nabi Hood AS and Saleh AS, visited Imam Jaffar us Sadiq’s AS Waari and Burhanuddin Maula’s RA farmhouse where the students and other zaireen prayed Imamat Namaz and enjoyed lunch.

On one of the last days in Karbala the students had the good fortune to sit in Huzoorala’s TUS Gurfa Mubaraka and discuss the impact to the trip as well as resolve to make changes in their lives when they returned home. This was one time when they revealed exactly how moved they had been by their experience. Some students talked about praying for their parents who had saved up for months to send them for this pilgrimage. Many thanked the principal Janab Sh Hashim bhai and the school administration for this life changing Ziyarat experience.

This is the second year that the Grade 10 that graduates has been taken for the KUN safar. The concept behind taking this class for this auspicious pilgrimage is for them to be blessed as they enter a momentous phase of the academic life in college as well as their future careers.

In the course of these nine days the students performed Ziyarats and experienced spiritual fulfillment. They learnt to be independent and enjoyed cooperating with each other in simple tasks like keeping their rooms clean and doing the laundry. They learnt discipline and time management and managing money as they travelled and shopped for their loved ones. For these 44 students this was a perfect Ohbat experience and prepared them for the Noha and Aweel that they vowed to perform during Ashara Mubaraka and the entire year round.

Project Based Learning Training at Badri High School

Project Based Learning Training at Badri High School

Teaching is a profession that creates all the other professions in the world. It bears the responsibility of producing useful and propitious citizens for the society. For the attainment of the mentioned goal, teachers gear themselves up by refining content and skills professionally. They enroll themselves in various trainings and workshops, so that they nurture the future of the nation in a desirable way.

In this century of change, Badri High School has been playing a pacesetting role in numerous fields. It has outstretched its horizons of innovations from Robotics and Mind Math to Teacher Training. Recently, three Project Based Learning Teachers were invited by PELICS, an institute in Mardan, Khyber Pakhtun Khuwa, where the struggle of BHS was greatly celebrated by media coverage.

In addition to this, Badri High School arranged a training workshop of 12 hours, divided in four consecutive days. The Project Based Learning training commenced on the 9th of July and concluded on the 12th of July` 2018. Eleven teachers from reputable schools and Institutions, such as The Academy, Al Jamea tus Saifiyah, Bahria Foundation, enrolled themselves in the training program.

The core objectives of the training were to make the teachers aware about the differences between Projects and Project Based Learning. The activities were devised in such a way that lesson planning, which is an integral part of any pedagogy, was taught and practiced thoroughly. The trainer, Ms Zenab Mohammad, who also leads the Project Based Learning Department, at BHS, also shared the concept of Design thinking and its effectiveness in the academic context.

The participants seemed very intent on implementing the pedagogy. Mulla Huzefa Bhai, a teacher from Al Jamea tus Saifiyah, mentioned that it was a remarkable experience. He also added that it would be more satisfying once he succeeds in implementing whatever he discovered. Another change maker from Al Jamea tus Saifiyah, Sh. Abizer Bhai, described the training as a beneficial interaction within the teaching community. He mentioned that trainings like this help one in development of self as a teacher and building confidence. One more participant, Amna Shabbir, an early years` teacher at The Academy expressed her desire to implement this out of the box training as soon as possible.

Throughout the training, the participants were engaged in numerous healthy discussions, the results of which will soon be witnessed by their schools or institutes Inshallah, because learning is a treasure that will follow its owner everywhere.
