A Coming-Together to Foster Learning

While the teachers remained neck-deep in result making and planning for the second term, everyone was thrilled to attend the special in-house training session arranged on Thursday 28th December 2017.

Janab Sh Hatim Gulam Abbasbhai from Al Jamea tus Saifiyah, Karachi inspired the team at BHS with a one hour session on Teaching in the Light of Wahye (Revelation). He shared his experience in teaching Uloom Kauneya (exact sciences) and reminded the teachers that the aim of education is to recognize and acknowledge the existence of Allah and offer gratitude to him. He spoke at length about referring to the Quran-the fountainhead of knowledge- to begin each lesson. He also shared a few handouts of Science lessons from the Uloome Kawneya books which opened up new horizons for the BHS facilitators.

This engrossing session was followed by a half an hour talk by Janab Sh Mustafa Hakimuddin, Principal of Saifiya Girls School, on the use of Butterfly EduFields’ STEM LEARNING SCIENCE KITS, which are being used in 9000+ schools by 11,00,000+ students. He generously shared his thoughts on how the use of these hands-on kits has revolutionised the manner of imparting knowledge at SGS.

This valuable twin in-house session aimed to help incorporate Muntalaqe Islami as well as STEM education in classroom teaching enabling our facilitators to create a perfect balance of Deen and Duniya.

Insha ul Madeh Festival at BHS

At BHS, Ayyam-u- Tabudaat and the esteemed occasion of Milad Syedna Mohammad  Burhanuddin(R.A)is being celebrated in a distinctive way. To commemorate these festivities, a grand event of Insha-u-Madeh was held at the B

HS ground on 4 Rabiul Akhir, Friday, the 22nd of Nov 2017. Students of the Primary and  Secondary section gathered to express their deep love and devotion for our Beloved Moula Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin (TUS)in the form of poetry. The poetic verses revealed their feeling of gratitude and impact of  Ashara Mubaraka 1439H in Karachi, on their bodies and soul.

Teachers of both sections fondly participated in Madeh composition, Thus all were busy in this passionate mode of “Ibadat”.

Along with the Madrasa staff, Abnaul- Jamea-tus- Saifiyah were also present to help and facilitate the young budding poets. Their presence added to the charm of the occasion. An event of this type was a successful initiative in the nurturing of future poets and a pathway to Madeh-writing of Dai-z-Zaman which is actually a part of faith for every individual mumin.

May we continue this beautiful “Ibadat” throughout our lifetime, and  may Allah (T.A) grant our beloved Moula a long and prosperous life till the day of judgement.

The Montessori Activity Room: A hub for learning with loads of fun!

Free-Play; We’ve all been there; whether playing ghar ghar or majlis majlis or school school, we all have fond memories of those carefree occasions of play when a dupatta became a blanket or suitably arranged pillows became an aeroplane.

But today, when our children propose to do the same, we are quick to provide alternate activities which are structured or ‘educational’.

We as parents and educators must understand that children require a blend of free-play and structured play to build an array of skills which are necessary for their development.

 

In the BHS Pre-Primary, a separate room has been set up for the children to experience free-play.  It is divided into areas which are separate and yet connected. The areas are stocked with open-ended material which lends itself well to the changing demands of the play such as blocks and bottle-caps as well specific -objective material such as puzzles. Important life skills are being learned and applied as children engage in free-play of their choice in the BHS Activity Room.

  1. As they arrange and rearrange the blocks, an idea begins to take a concrete form. They are building creativity and the ability to come up with unique ideas.

  1. As these children play in the home area, they learn to care and develop decision-making skills.

  1. During pretend play, they build their social skills and develop the ability to self-regulate their emotions and impulses.

  1. Crucial cognitive abilities are being built during free-play. Language, math and science is explored and investigated in a fun way.

  1. Children discover their interests as they engage in different kinds of play.

So the next time your child decides to play ghar ghar with a sibling or by himself, don’t interrupt him. He is learning while he plays.

Milad in Winter: Double celebration in BHS Montessori

Winter in Karachi is a unique phenomenon. It comes too late, goes away too soon and therefore is nothing short of a celebration.

The BHS Montessori planned to savor the beauty of winter with all its perks on Friday, December 22, 2017.

Friday dawned doubly blessed as it was the day of  Milad-e-Imam-i-zaman S.A. The children came to school in bright and colourful winter clothes. After Dua, Senior B presented a skit in Urdu on winter. Artificial snow spray brought forth shrieks of delight from the young audience.

During circle-time, children discussed all about winter. They rubbed a little baby lotion on their skin for a hands-on experience of skin-care during winter. They made a Milad Mubarak craft card and did a free-hand drawing on ‘winter makes me think of’.

Once the bonfire was ready, children gathered around the bonfire to enjoy peanuts, marshmallows dipped in chocolate sauce and hot cocoa milk. It was fun to ‘blow and watch it snow’ around the snowman.  Janab Shk. Hashim cut the milad cake amid loud and enthusiastic cries of Allahu Akbar, Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin Zindabad and Maula, Maula Mufaddal Maula!

Children went home tired but happy.

WINTER ROBOTICS CAMP AT BHS

Badri High School has brought an ideal way to ensure that your child makes productive use of the approaching winter break. When we introduced the Robotics program at BHS this year in August 2017-18, we saw how the students enjoyed it and how it helped make them alert, active, engaged and incorporated critical thinking. We saw that this was the future of education and we wanted our children to embrace the future with confidence.

But the dedicated team of educationists at BHS realized that the students in the North Nazimabad area did not have a place which offered Robotics nearby. We wished to share this experience with other young learners. Thus, with the cooperation of the team at Robotics Lab, we strove to make this one-of-a-kind experience available to all at our campus this winter. Here are a few details of the week-long Winter Science Camp we are offering at Badri High School from 26th December 2017:

Mini Bots: Robotics for Ages 5 -8: This course has the Lego WeDo set and it combines the beloved LEGO bricks with one motor, two sensors, and a hub that connects the model to the computer. Simple drag-and-drop visual programming software is then used to bring the model to life. With this kid-friendly approach, the set makes learning fun, inspiring and engaging. Kids learn about complex topics in the fields of physics, engineering, and programming, as well as develop motor and cognitive skills through robot building, all as they have fun with LEGO bricks.

Its simplicity and versatility make WeDo a great set to use in the classroom for teaching robotics and programming and enhancing STEM lessons. Children work in pairs using one WeDo set and one computer or tablet, which improves their collaboration and communication skills.

Bot Mania: Robotics for Ages 9 – 16 (Robotics Engineering):

This is a beginning course in Robotics. We utilize Lego Mindstorms /EV3 kits, software and various Lego Robotics materials. The objective of this course is to introduce the student to basic programming as well as problem solving strategies. This course will involve students in the development, building and programming of a LEGO Mindstorms/EV3 robot. Students will work hands-on in teams to design, build, program and document their progress. Topics may include motor control, gear ratios, torque, friction, sensors, timing, program loops, logic gates, decision-making, timing sequences, propulsion systems and binary number systems. Student designed robots will be programmed to compete in various courses as developed by First Lego League.

13th Karachi International Book Fair at the Expo Center

The children of Badri High School, Classes III, IV and V attended the 13th Karachi International Book Fair at the Expo Center, Karachi on Friday, 8th December during school hours.
The children were amazed and excited to see the number and assortment of books displayed in English, Urdu and other languages in the 3 halls of the Expo Center.

They were guided by their class teachers and the librarian in purchasing the books.

The students were delighted to receive gifts from stalls like calenders, books and stationery.

It was a memorable trip for the children and played a crucial part in inculcating the love and worth of books in these young readers.

Learning Compassion-A Trip to SCINOSA Day Care Home

Class IX visited SCINOSA Day Home which is a school for children with special needs. The children were eager to learn more practical aspects of Special education after reading a lesson about Helen Keller, which is a part of their syllabus.

When children reached the school, they were amazed to see the purpose-built infrastructure. The teachers of SCINOSA greeted the group warmly. The tour started with a little discussion about the purpose of the visit. One of the students, Sakina Shabbir of Class IX A promptly replied that they wanted to learn more about people who have more challenging lives than them.

 

Firstly, the group was taken to academic classes where students, out of their curiosity, asked a number of questions. The teacher satisfied the students by briefing them about the individualized curriculum and planning for each child that they do. The time table for each day was also shared with the students. Then, the students were taken to rooms serving different purposes. These rooms include a speech therapy room where certified speech therapists were working with some children in order to make their speech clearer. There was another room which was specifically made to improve the motor skills of these special children.

 

Students were surprised to see special children making show pieces, frames and other things out of newspaper in the recycling room. Khaddar room was another jolt to the students where they saw a senior special student working expertly with the khaddar machine, making cloth. All were rendered speechless. In the arts and crafts room, some special children were busy with embroidery while some were engrossed in khaatli work. Then came the turn of the fine arts room where master pieces made by the special children were on display. Our students were tongue-tied. The teacher of SCINOSA showed the students a mural which was painted by the special children.

 

There were rooms for teaching cane work, jewelry making, bead work, and wood work. Students were surprised to see each room packed with special learners. One of the students inquired about the reason of teaching these skills to special children, to which, the teacher replied that they believe in facilitating each child of the school to become a functioning member of the society. These skills support the children in advocating for themselves in all practical life settings.

 

Students were also taken to a gym where special children are encouraged to do physical activity in order to regulate their weight. A special child, in the gym, greeted each student individually. This was the way he showed his excitement upon seeing visitors. Another special child, Zain, pointed to the watch reminding his coach that it was time for milk. These children are provided with milk and other healthy food, according to their individual diet plan made by the school. Students were also taken to hydrotherapy room where luke warm water is used as a remedy to soothe and relax special children.

 

Culinary art is also a part of their need based curriculum. Rida, who was busy practicing how to make tea, along with another child, who was making an omelet, demonstrated to the students their particular method. Grooming class was the last spot of the school where special girls were taught how to take care of themselves. In the end, students of BHS thanked the vice principal of SCINOSA Day, who specially came in the lunch room to meet them. The Principal talked about the initiative that the school has taken. The students asked her a bunch of questions, which she answered.

 

This was indeed a special trip. A major objective of this trip was to encourage students to show empathy towards children with special needs. They were deeply moved after the trip. This trip was an attempt to open up a new window to the students as Sydney Harris has rightly said that the whole purpose of education is to turn mirrors into windows.

Relax! Its Exam Time!

Exam time is stressful. With so much to memorize and learn, students tend to get confused and end up writing something totally different from what they are supposed to. So to help the students write appropriately and score well, an interactive session was conducted on ” How to study” by Sir Amjad Ayub and “How to attempt an exam paper” by Ms Rashida Adnan. The session was targeted towards class 6,7 and 8 grade students.

The 30 min session started off with Sir Amjad giving each student a paper with a few questions on the student himself to be answered. He kept saying read the instructions but the students started the paper in the race to complete first. After the initial commotion a girl finally figured out that as per the given instructions they only had to answer Q 5 and 6. Immediately the students caught their mistakes.

Sir explained that students need to study for at least 2 hours maximum without any disturbances and then they need to take a break. But the break has to be anything but sleeping such as sports, jogging, strolling, mind games to relax the mind. But the most important thing is that the students must create a proper place and environment to study and not sit on the bed.

The second part of session was on how to attempt the exam paper which dealt with 3 key points. The first part dealt with pre- paper preparation, the stationary requirements, writing boards, admit cards but most importantly to be stress free.

Then in the second part reading the paper; marking easy, manageable and tough initials to save time, marking the key words in the questions like solve, explain, factorize were explained.

Thirdly, the talk dealt with how to manage time wisely. The facilitator explained that 10 to 15 minutes should be allotted to reading the whole paper; give answers to the point as required and to attempt the questions you know well first to boost confidence.

The session ended on the point that once you give your paper don’t go out and discuss with anyone as it increases the stress and you are not able to prepare well for the next paper. So let bygones be bygones. The students left rejuvenated and in a positive frame of mind to handle the imminent midterm exams. Good luck students!
