BHS MAKES IT TO THE QUARTER-FINAL AT EDVON ROBOTICS LEAGUE.

“A competitive person is always a winner.”

Under the light of this quote Badri High School continues to provide a platform which provides opportunities to their students to compete in different competitions and gain exposure to the world. BHS

His Holiness Dr. Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin (TUS) said: “A person should not compete with others but should compete with himself for their betterment.”

14 students of Class 8 of Badri High School participated in the Edvon Robotics League, divided into 4 teams. On 13th and 14th of October 2018 students visited the Usman Institute of Engineering and Technology where they were given a workshop on assembling and programming the Line Following Robot.

Students enjoyed the training session and their passion and interest was highly appreciated by the organizers. The students were so enthusiastic that for a week and after school hours they practiced under the guidance of their Science and Computer teachers, Sir Ibrahim and Sir Amjad.

After a grueling week, when finally 20th October 2018—the day of the contest dawned, students made their way to the reputed engineering college, NED University’s NIC Department. All 14 students were very pumped up as they had been addressed by the Principal before leaving for the venue of competition.

Among the elite educationists of the city Badri High School’s students stood proud among 99 participating schools. The competition was based on 4 rounds. The first round was a knockout round, the second was the qualifying round, the third was the semifinal and the last round was the final.

The BHS team passed the knockout round and was one of the 25 teams to reach the quarterfinal round. The excitement of the students showed that they were confident to win the finals.

The teams missed out on making it to the semifinal by a mere one second. They were head to head with Pak Turk, Generations, Aga Khan, Dawood Engineering and its likes.

The positivity of the students was evident form the fact that their knock out did not  demotivate them but they vowed to practice more and prepare themselves for future contests.

The students learnt teamwork, patience, coordination, critical thinking and an eye opening exposure to the world of engineering. Maybe many of this batch may be studying at engineering colleges six years from now due to the seed of interest which was planted today within the walls of BHS.

BHS Celebrates World Food Day 2018

BHS Celebrates World Food Day 2018 | By Sakina Amir Godhrawala (Student of Class 9)

In the year 1979, an organization was formed because of the alarming case of people suffering from hunger and malnutrition. Every year we celebrate this sublime day to eradicate hunger, spread awareness about food and help people consume proper diet.

Badri High School (BHS) believes in creating awareness about the world we live in, in line with the vision of Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin TUS who guides us to waste not a single grain of food and wishes for each believer to eat well.

Following this line of action on 16th of October 2018, students of BHS filled thaalis, stuck stickers creating awareness about saving food and distributed Faize Mawaid Burhani all around Al Mohalatul Burhaniyah.  A poster making contest as well as a walkathon around the vicinity helped engage the heads, hands and hearts of the children  towards this cause.

The school day was filled with enactments on World Food Day and Food Security as well as informative literature and news stories were shared in class.

This day was commemorated to create food awareness, about its hygiene and warn people against consuming improper diet.

On one hand there is hunger, while on the other due to improper diet or eating of excess of junk food nearly 40% of the world’s population is obese and 25% is overweight. Let us all play a role in saving food, eating the right diet and realizing the dream of a Zero Hunger World.

Counseling Students—Because Education Teaches Compassion

A school must give much more that knowledge from books; it must bestow to its pupils beyond the confines of a carefully thought-out curriculum; it should teach much more than things printed in black and white. It must do more than stimulate minds—it should touch hearts and heal souls.

Badri High School envisages that an education must enable a child to become the best version of himself; unearthing his potential; allow him to live a life of dignity in this world and contribute to society.

However, sometimes life puts young children in situations which they or their parents are not equipped to deal with. We see students struggle with learning disabilities, some coming from dysfunctional families and broken homes. All this takes a toll on a child and hampers his intellectual growth and ability to learn.

This is the reason why a student counselor is a part of the faculty of any reputed educational institute.

Since the Academic year 2017-18 a student counselor visited BHS one Saturday a month to help students who were seen struggling in school. Over 40 students were counseled in repeated sessions in the last year, and in most cases positive results were seen as students blossomed as sensitive issues were addressed.

This year, the need for a counselor was felt even more as awareness regarding the benefits of counseling were clearly manifested last year. Parents themselves requested for their wards to be counseled, feeling at a loss as to address many behavioral issues.

Thus in this Academic Year 2018-19, a qualified Clinical Psychologist, Dr. Syeda Urooj Zehra, who is also Psychotherapist and Speech Therapist, has been hired to come to school every Thursday to address the needs of students identified by teachers as having behavioural issues due to deeper, underlying causes.

The vision is to hold the hands of these children, give them a listening ear and give them objective advice to help them cope in the best possible way with the situation they are in.

Along with this, career counseling is an important agenda to help the students carve a road-map for their future. For this professionals have been invited to visit the school and give motivating talks to provide an insight into different fields and their scope to the students. The goal is to provide them enough knowledge about the world beyond the walls of the school so that they make informed decisions about their future careers.

One-on-one sessions with reputed educationists like Sh. Moiz bhai Sabunwala, who recently came to orient the students about their choice of subjects, will help the students chalk a game plan for their future.

BHS believes in leaving no stone unturned in helping and supporting each and every student to realize his potential and these counseling initiatives are surely a step in the desired direction.

Learning from the wise

“Is there anyone so wise as to learn by the experience of others?”–Voltaire

One learns not just from books but from the lives of great people.   True education is one that teaches an individual to treat each day as a learning experience, to observe the world closely and glean lessons from the lives of others.

This is the reason why Badri High School invites the learned and accomplished members of the Dawoodi Bohra community to come and share their inspiring life experiences with the students here.

In the past a distinguished assortment of scholars, professionals, office bearers, social workers and students have been invited to give motivating talks to the senior students of BHS and the students have always been duly enraptured by the biographies of these living legends.

One such erudite member of the community visited the BHS premises on Monday, 8th October 2018. Shaikh Ghulam Abbas Cyclewala, one of the most experienced Chemical Engineers of Pakistan, consultant, businessman, educationist, spokesman, artist, traveler and philanthropist, recently published his riveting autobiography titled CHEMAGE: LEARN+EARN+RETURN. After Sh. Ghulam Abbas was welcomed in the assembly early Monday morning he was introduced by the Principal Janab Sh. Hashim bhai and later he met with the students of Class 9-10 in the Computer Lab.

In one hour, he shared the incredible journey of his thrilling life and the innumerable hurdles he had to overcome to attain the position he stands at today. The children were hanging onto each word as he told them about the struggles of his childhood and how perseverance pays off. He led the students through the highs and lows of his ambitious youth and inspired them to live their dreams. Through his eyes the children learnt about the Karachi of yore and its progress through the last several decades. He counseled them regarding their future and helped them devise a strategy to attain their goals, all the while advising them to the ambitious, focused and daring.

We are privileged to be part of a community where a great number of learned men are generous to share their experiences so that the youth may learn from the foibles and derive inspiration from their accomplishments.

A day to explore our Sindhi origin

The world is a book and those who do not travel read only page.

Travelling and exploration is considered the most significant forms of self-education. In the olden days, the wisdom of a person was gauged by the number of places visited by him. Even for the sake of acquiring formal education, people of earlier times believed travelling to be a good omen.

In this century of technology and innovation, where, the places one wishes to visit can visit you, Badri High School believes educational excursions and trips to different places of historical and cultural significance as an inseparable part of teaching and learning.

One such extra ordinary signature trip of BHS is a trip to interior Sindh. This trip serves to be a window of experiential learning for the students of Grade IX as Sindhi language is one of the compulsory subjects. The content of Sindhi and English, in this particular grade, as per the Secondary Board of Education curriculum, highlights Sindh as a center of cultural heritage and ancestral values.

On 29th September, 24 students of Grade IX offered morning prayers at Husami Masjid, where a bus waited for them. The air was filled with enthusiastic chatter when the students boarded the bus. Ajrak was draped around the shoulders of many as a symbol of their zest and zeal. Cries of Allah O Akbar and Long live Syedna Muffaddal Saifuddin filled the air as the bus left with the young explorers. Recitation of verses from the Holy Quran along with Ya Syeda and Fulkul Hussain provided the globetrotters with the barakat needed.

The first stop was Dhamthal where hot, delectable halwa puri waited for the students. After having the much-needed breakfast, the bus headed off to BhitShah. On the way to Bhit Shah, students visited the once small village, Hala Haveli, where the famous Sindhi Saint Shah Abdul Latif Bhitai was born to Syed Habib Shah. Now, it is a developing city of Sindh, which is also known to be the center of handicrafts and the famous gulkaari of the province. Students were taken to a pottery cottage industry where they saw how pots were made out of clay and how gulkaari was done. The students were mesmerized by the whole process.

Still fascinated by the flowered pots and pans of clay, the students were taken to the famous Hala bazaar where the eager bunch of buyers rushed to the shops selling ajraks, khaddar suits, pottery, sindhi topi, and handicrafts. The experience of shopping in the native language was a challenging task. The purpose of language as a communication tool was highlighted.

The next stop was the shrine of the famous saint of Sindh, Shah Abdul Latif Bhitai, who was known for his services for bringing the non-Muslims to the fold of Islam. As the Urs of Shah Abdul Latif Bhitai is in Safar, the shrine was packed with disciples and devotees, paying their respect to the Saint of Sindh. The students offered Zuhr prayers in the masjid in the vicinity of the shrine. A bunch of devotees were reciting the kalam from Shah Jo Risalo, written by the pious saint, on the melodious notes of tambooro, a musical instrument invented by Shah Abdul Latif Bhitai himself. The emanation of the shrine at the time of rendition displayed respect and love for each other, which was the message of Shah Abdul Latif Bhitai.

A museum at Bhit Shah was visited by the students which had dioramas of Sindhi folk tales on display. It was a visual treat to see famous folklores such as Sassi punnu, Meer Mohaari, Marai and many more come alive.

By this time, the morning breakfast and the snacks provided in the bus had been digested. So the expedition group sat down to have their lunch in a local hotel on the highway where they sat on manjis like people in Sindh.

The next stop was the Sindh University, Jamshoro, where lies Ms. Elsa Kazi, the poetess of the Neem Tree and the German wife of Allam I.I. Qazi. The group boarded the bus cheerily and was greeted by a heavy downpour on the way to Jamshoro. The kotri barrage was a visual treat in thick, driving rain. The rain and the bus both stopped outside the Institute of Sindhology, the first Sindhi language based research department, operating at the University of Sindh, Jamshoro. The students went off on to the grave of the poetess. There were cries of amazement when the students saw that the grave is actually surrounded with lots of Neem Trees.

Could man be as bold as thou and rise,

Above the earth with the sheltering arm,

To save the protected ones from harm,

From sorrows, poverty and vice,

Through sacrifice!

The quiet surroundings were echoing with the message of love and affection for one`s brethren.

The students visited the grave of Allama I.I. Qazi, the vice chancellor of the University and husband of the poetess as well. The students boarded the bus once again to retreat to the city of lights with lots of memories and experiences that only travelling can teach. With tired feet and puffy eyes, the group reached home at 9:30 PM after a day well spent.
